Ribbon Synthesis Typeface
Typography, Experimental Design
Through the creation of this typeface, I explored what initially appeared to be two conflicting interests of mine—art and science. Instead of treating these interests as opposites, I sought to combine them by exploring how they could coexist harmoniously. I drew inspiration from designers like Iris Van Herpen, who combines high fashion with engineering. Additionally, my approach was shaped by preconceived notions of art as fluid and open-ended, contrasting with science's reputation for rigidity and precision. In designing this typeface, I aimed to challenge the idea of how a form could embody both qualities simultaneously, reflecting the overlaps between art and science.
For my process, I started with a preexisting typeface, Club Lithographer, which already possessed a fluid quality. I then introduced sharper elements by bifurcating the letterforms using ellipse shapes. Finally, I adjusted the anchor points of each letterform to enhance the organic quality I desired. Overall, this typeface serves as a testament to the concept of embodying two seemingly contradictory attributes.
